An individual made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader just before it was made public, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the US operation.
Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the close of the month surged in the hours before Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.
One account, which joined the platform in December and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32.5K.
It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Market statistics shows that traders put the odds of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.
But the odds had jumped to over 10% by late Friday night and surged in the early hours of January 3rd, suggesting a sharp shift in positions just before the social media post was made.
"That trade has all the signs of a trade based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.
Several of other traders also profited large payouts from predicting the capture.
Politicians are growing concerned.
A bill introduced on Monday aims to prohibit public officials from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.
Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the United States, with traders able to predict everything from sports to politics.
The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.
Trading on insider information is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting industry.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
