Top Small Screen Selections: Seven Essential Films This Week

Pick of the Week

This Satirical Thriller

Director Coralie Fargeat's daring satire examines the oppressive nature of feminine aesthetics along with the dreaded aspects of advancing years. Hollywood star Demi Moore offers a masterful performance playing Elisabeth, a 50-year-old film star forced into starring in an aerobics show on TV. Edged out due to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she seeks out a mysterious and gruesome process titled "The Substance". This creates a younger clone called Sue, leading to an increasingly parasitic dynamic among both women. This Friday, the streaming service Paramount+

This Mystery Thriller

This suspenseful story includes Knightley playing Laura, a top-notch writer who opts for a hiatus from covering world issues to board an opulent ship alongside a gravely sick wealthy inheritor and donor, her spouse, plus additional affluent guests. Yet once an enigmatic female falls into the sea during the evening and the entire crew claims she was never there, Laura's investigative instincts kick in. Out now, on Netflix

This Supernatural Story

Soderbergh challenges his film-making abilities with this nifty ghostly tale captured wholly through the eyes of a ghost. When a household with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe moves into their new suburban house, the filming device – representing the ghost – follows them around. The daughter appears conscious of the ghostly being, and the entity appears protective of her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that remains concise, featuring a surprise that may be unexpected. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, the Sky channel

This Self-Referential Film

Nicolas Cage embraces his cult stardom via this self-referential adventure. He plays an egotistical Hollywood actor playing himself who accepts a $1m payday to visit a celebration at a Mediterranean location for the rich Javi Gutierrez. Contacted by the intelligence agency to investigate the potential kingpin, the actor's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, evening, Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

Scott Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller stands strong without requiring a follow-up. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, several disappearances has made the local kids frightened. Once Finney is kidnapped by the villain and locked up in a dungeon, he dreads a terrible outcome. Yet the old telephone mounted nearby continues to ring, with spooky callers giving advice, and the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the struggle between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for Mammon in this director's wonderfully garish biopic about the fallen religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. The actor plays the corrupt Bakker, who states initially, asserting religious justification for riches. Both individuals begin profiting from the American public's religious faith. It's a spectacle of bad interior design, excessive cosmetics and bad faith, though Chastain manages to depict the real-life figure in a likable light. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, Film4

This Espionage Thriller

This period's additional entry from the filmmaker is a intelligence thriller as sharp as the polo necks worn by Fassbender's British agent. He is tasked to discover a double agent among the team from five suspects – among them is his own wife. Each performer are masters of understated style, so a delicious psychological game of fact versus fiction takes place. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela participate the smart espionage amusement. October 17th, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema Premiere
